Facebook just announced and released that it is allowing pages to convert over to it Timeline format. You can get more details here. We thought it would be a time to tell you how this will affect your page.
ROICOM believes there are good and bad things about the new Timeline for pages. At this point we are NOT upgrading our clients! We believe that the bad outweigh the good. Read more below. Facebook has said this upgrade will not be forced until March 30th. Hopefully, the issues will be fixed by then.
Larger, wider tabs.
This will give you more room to work with! Currently, page tabs are only 520px wide, but with the new Timeline for pages will give you 810px of content area to use. You are now able to use HTML, Images, or external URLs for the content of your tab, and you can still fan gate the content.
New Larger Tab Icons
Instead of small images that are hard to see, application (or tab) images will now be 111px x 74px. The images can be easily changed by selecting the Pencil in the upper right corner of the tab image and selecting Edit Settings. Then simply change the Custom Tab Image setting.
Existing Tabs Display
While they don’t fill up the entire area, the current 520px wide tabs still display in the new Timeline, meaning you do have to recreate your tabs if you don’t want to.
These are some positives to this new Timeline for Pages; however, there are two major negatives. These two negatives are why you shouldn’t upgrade your page… yet.
Currently, you can set a default landing tab for your page. The new Timeline does not have the ability to automatically send a user to a specified tab (application) on your page. In other words, you cannot have a custom landing page. Everyone who access your page, will see your wall, both fans and non-fans. We’re hoping this is just an oversight, and not a permanent change.
Also, the new Timeline doesn’t refresh when someone Likes you page. This can be a huge issue if you are running fan-gated promotions. When a non-fan Likes your page, the new Facebook Timeline for pages, currently does not refresh the page. Meaning that your page will not automatically show the new fan special fan only content. Fans have to be prompted to refresh their page manually.
These two reasons alone are reasons not to update to the new Facebook Timeline for Pages. If Facebook does not change these things, it will change the way business use the social media site for offer special deals for their customers.
